Highlighting the women's side was the dominance of the dash events. Winning the 100 meter dash was junior Davina McCluney with a time of 12:29. Coming in second in the same event was sophomore Myiesha Spates with a time of 12:54. This pair also excelled in the 200 meter dash with McCluney placing second (25.47) and Spates placing third (25.76).
Freshman Sheri Calhoun and Renata Simmons placed second (1:00.25) and third (1:01.46), respectively, in the 400 meter dash, while the 100 meter hurdles was won by senior Kenyetta Grigsby with a time of 14.17. The EKU 4x400 meter relay team won its event with a clock time of 4:10.54.
Highlighting the men's side was the sweep of the 200 and 400 meter dash events. Winning the 200 meter dash was senior Jaidante Burton with a time of 21.95. Coming in second in the same event was fellow EKU senior Alex Bannister with a time of 22.05. Burton also won the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.79.
Senior Daniel Koech won the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:04.41, while EKU freshman James Mutuse finished second with a time of 4:05.61. The freshman Mutuse won the 3000 meter steeplechase event with a time of 9:35.14. The Colonels also took the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:34.24.
"Overall, I was pleased with our level of competition for both men and women. The weather was horrible, but the people who did compete, competed well," said EKU head track coach Rick Erdmann.
The Colonels travel to the University of Tennessee's Dogwood Relays later this week.
"This is one of the high caliber events of the South. There will be more than 75 teams competing. We will run in most of the relay events." said Erdmann.
