COLONEL CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HEAD TO INDIANA
RICHMOND, Ky. - Following a sweep of the Eastern Kentucky University Invitational last Friday by both the Colonel men's and women's cross country teams, these Eastern squads' next competition will be Saturday in Bloomington, IN, when EKU makes an appearance in the Indiana University Invitational.
Eastern's women scored an impressive win in the EKU Invitational as that team registered a total of 20 points, easily winning over units from Morehead State (51), Louisville (58) and Kentucky (97).
EKU senior Jenni Brown of Salem, OH, was the individual champion in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:58.0. For this effort, she shared OVC Runner of the Week honors with Southeast Missouri's Tammy Wenkel.
Rounding out Eastern's top five were Theresa Olsen in second at 18:04; Celestina Ogbolugo in third at 18:13; Heather Davel in fifth at 18:34; and Jennifer Wheeler in ninth at 18:57.
Eastern sophomore James Mutuse led the men's team to a team total of 19 points as the Colonels cruised to victory in this 8,000-meter event. Finishing second in the men's meet with 57 points was Morehead State, followed by Louisville at 66, Berea College at 84 and Kentucky with 126 points.
Mutuse, a sophomore from Nairobi, Kenya, who was running in just his second meet as a Colonel, outdueled teammate Mohammed Khayr for the individual title as he clocked a 25:05, eight seconds ahead of Khayr. Mutuse was selected as the OVC Runner of the Week for this effort.
Eastern's David Machungo was third at 25:24. EKU's Ryan Parrish finished fifth in 25:27, while the Colonels' Soto Ogawa was eighth at 26:29.
"We were very pleased with both teams' performance and anticipate strong showings from both teams in our last two meets of the season," said EKU head cross country coach Rick Erdmann.
Following Saturday's meet at Indiana, Eastern will take part in the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship Meet which will be held Oct. 30 at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.
