BLOSSOM, BLOCHWITZ NAMED TO GTE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAMS
RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky University track stars Sarah Blossom and Daniel Blochwitz have been named to selected GTE Academic All-America Teams for the University Division's Spring Sports At-Large category.
Blossom, a senior from Indianapolis, IN, was a first-team selection on this team, while Blochwitz, a senior from Niederwillingen, Germany, was chosen to the third team.
"This is a great honor for both these outstanding student-athletes," said EKU track and cross country coach Rick Erdmann. "They both know the importance of balancing their athletics endeavors with those involving classwork. We are pleased they have been recognized nationally for this kind of discipline."
Blossom, who was named a first-team GTE Academic All-American for the Fall/Winter Sports At-Large Team back in April, received her fifth notice on a GTE Academic All-America national squad in her four years at Eastern.
A 4.0 student who will graduate in December with a degree in occupational therapy and a minor in psychology, Blossom was a second-team All-OVC Indoor Team and All-OVC Outdoor Team selection in 1999 as she placed second in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs at the OVC meet. In her Eastern career, she was also a three-time All-OVC Cross Country Team member and was the 1995 OVC Female Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Blochwitz, who compiled a 3.77 GPA in photography at Eastern, was a 1999 All-OVC Outdoor Team choice after winning the 400-meter hurdles at the conference meet. A five-time All-OVC track athlete, Blochwitz is the school's recordholder in two events - the 400-meter hurdles (51.30) and the 800-meter run (1:51.08).
A first-team selection to the 1998 GTE Academic All-District team for Spring Sports At-Large, Blochwitz is an eight-time German champion in the 400-meter hurdles.
