EKU WOMEN'S TRACK TEAM CAPTURES OVC TITLE

RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Eastern Kentucky University women's track team won the 1999 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship this past weekend at the Tom C. Samuels Track in Richmond.

Eastern finished the meet with a total score of 142 points, while the second place team of Southeast Missouri scored 114 for the two-day event.

EKU head track coach Rick Erdmann said he was extremely pleased with the women's performance at the championship meet.

First place finishers for the EKU women's team included discus thrower Kathy Dodsworth (155-04), Lystra Bartholomew in the 100 meter hurdles (13.87) and Jamie King in the 1500 meter run (4:35.47) and the 3000 meter run (9:55.14).

EKU finished fifth in the OVC men's championship won by Eastern Illinois.

Top finishers for the men featured Mohammed Khayr winning the men's 10,000 meter run (31:43.11), David Machungo taking the 5,000 meter run (15:00.23) and Daniel Blochwitz capturing first place in the 400-meter hurdles (51.78).

"Sometimes it's hard to coach two teams, because you tend to gravitate toward the one with the best performances and skills and that hurts the other team," Erdmann said.
